The Italian Guide To Planning & Catering Your 2016 Holiday Party

The holidays are upon us, and we’re all looking forward to some much-needed relaxation and time with family. Some of us, however, are looking forward to another element of the holiday season: throwing holiday parties! The holidays represent a unique opportunity to host fun, memorable gatherings with close and not-so-close family, friends, and loved ones. And if you’re looking for a theme that’ll bring together incredible food, lots of energy, and big-time fun, look no further than an Italian party theme with authentic Italian dishes catered by Ferraro’s Italian Restaurant in Las Vegas!

Italian culture is known for a focus on living life to the fullest, and Italians turn every event into a spectacle of food, wine, and fun. If you want to host an event that every guest will remember, choosing Italian culture as the theme for the party is the perfect starting point.

Italian Party Invitations

Italy is home to numerous internationally recognized icons of its culture, and you can use those to weave the theme into the party right from the first element: the invitations. When making your invitations, you might try printing out a few Italian icons like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the canals of Venice, or even a piping-hot Margherita pizza and using them as images on the invitations. To add a little more spice, try including some phrases in Italian on the card like these:

“Unisciti alla festa” — Join the party
“Ciao a Tutti” — Hello everyone
“Cosa ti piace fare festa?” — Do you love to party?

Decor

When decorating for an Italian-themed party, it’s hard to go too big. Opt for big, attention-grabbing elements, bold colors, and lots of iconography. Hang a map of Italy on the wall, pin the Italian flag on the ceiling, and plenty of red, green, and white balloons. For the table, don’t shy away from large, ornate candle holders and table ornaments. Bowls of olives make great finger food while also adding an Italian flare, and having classical or opera music on as ambience is a great way to set the mood.

Food & Drink

Here’s where the Italian theme can truly shine! Italy is world-renowned for its food and its wines, and these should be on full display at any Italian themed party. You can style the food after a traditional Italian meal, serving dishes in traditional order:

  • Antipasti (appetizers), including things like bruschetta, cheeses, and cured meats.
  • Primi piatti (first main), which can include soups and pastas.
  • Secondi piatti (second main), which is usually a meat dish.
  • And finally dessert – think fruit, pastries, or a cake like tiramisu. This is also when you can break out dessert wines.

Wine should be available and flowing (gratuitously) throughout the meal and the party. Choosing wines will depend largely on the dishes you choose, but it’s hard to go wrong with Italian staples like Pinot Grigio, Barbera, Primitivo, and of course, Sangiovese.

Party Favors

No party is complete without favors for the guests, and an Italian theme gives you plenty of ideas to choose from! Things like miniature bottles of olive oil and balsamic vinegar, jars of pasta or pesto, or even a small bottle of wine are all great ways to give the spirit of Italy to your guests. You can also add things like wine corks, chocolates, or small containers of olives.
